Lucy Kaplansky writes with emotional clarity, intelligence and subtle storytelling.  She can easily weave personal and universal themes that are intimate and expansive.  She finds the spiritual in the everyday and is skilled in using narrative and archetype to illuminate our emotions.

 

Lucy is an acclaimed singer-songwriter whose warm, crystalline voice and emotionally intelligent songwriting have made her one of the most respected artists in contemporary folk. A native of Chicago, she moved to New York City in the 1980s, where she became part of the Greenwich Village folk scene alongside Shawn Colvin, Suzanne Vega, and Richard Shindell. After stepping away from music to earn a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, she returned to performing and recording in the 1990s, quickly gaining recognition for her intimate storytelling and luminous harmonies.

Over the course of her celebrated career, Kaplansky has released a string of critically praised albums, including Ten Year NightEvery Single Day, and The Red Thread, blending personal reflection with universal themes of love, loss, and resilience. She has collaborated with folk luminaries such as Dar Williams and Richard Shindell in the beloved trio Cry Cry Cry, toured internationally, and earned numerous accolades for her artistry. With her rare combination of intelligence, empathy, and vocal grace, Lucy Kaplansky continues to move audiences with songs that feel both timeless and deeply human.
